A Bit of Hope

"Don't give up on us yet. I can see things are changing slowly. It's getting better"

That is what a student said to me today. I means a lot to me. More than the student will know. It does give me hope to keep going. I won't give up on you... if you don't give up on me. I know there is a championship band at Dutch Fork. We just got to find a way to chip away the stone to reveal the masterpiece.

Awesome statement! I'm a band director in Hattiesburg, Ms and have been reading through some of your old posts and plan on reading some more.

Later,

It seems your blog is focused mainly on marching band. What about a successful concert or jazz band? In my opinion, an all around successful band program doesn't just focus on one aspect.

Dear Ann,

You obviously haven't read back very far into the blog. If any body puts and emphasis on concert band, it is me. Perhaps a band program that takes 2 groups to concert festival and is trying to add a jazz band class to the program? Remember though, band is not a buffet. You can't just take that stuff you like and leave that other stuff for others. Marching band is a big part of what we do in the fall. We haven't touched marching instruments since Nov. 1. Just read back and you will see how I feel about concert band. It is the basis for all we do.

I must add. I attended a program last Friday where the ALL volunteer, NEW Jazz band performed. The students are wonderful! Their instruction is none too shabby either! Mr. Brady, your efforts, and those of your students are evident! Keep it up.

Ann-
Just to make another comment, my child still practices everyday and has learned that concert time during band is a great time to expand her appreciation for music. She is now even cosidering doing some type of band during college. She just went to USC Band Clinic where she meet kids from all over the southeast. She had 4 days of intense music and LOVED IT. She didn't have an opportunity to do this in the past...so I say thanks to Mr. B for giving that to our kids. This is the first time Mr. B has had a chance to work with our kids on a long amt of time just working on Music...Mr. B I am excited about our future and people just need to give you at least a whole year to see the biggest difference.
Ann- I hope you get invovled with the parents during marching season, because that is when we parent are mostly involved...cheering all the kids on and just in case you are a new commer, It is very competitive so yeah there is alot of talk from kids and parents. Friendly of coarse...competitive though!
Go BAND!!!!
